Citizenship
Obtaining Citizenship of the United States
U.S. citizenship is obtained by birth or naturalization.
Unless you were born in the United States, or your parents were United States citizens at the time of your birth, you are required to go through the naturalization process to obtain citizenship.
Applying for U.S. Citizenship
Deciding to become a United States citizen marks a meaningful milestone in your life as an immigrant. If you wish to seek citizenship, you must show your commitment to the foundation that binds the American people, and in turn, you will enjoy the rights and privileges that come with U.S. citizenship.
Requirements for Citizenship
Before applying for citizenship:
- The Individual must be a legal permanent resident (have a green card) for a minimum of five years. (If the Individual is married to a U.S. citizen, this is reduced to three years)
- Is at least 18 years old
- The Individual did not make any other country your permanent home during their permanent residency in the U.S.
- The Resident must pass a test to show your ability to read, write and speak the English language and pass an exam based on their knowledge of U.S. history and government.
- Have a clean criminal record – demonstrating good moral character is an important aspect to the citizenship application.
